...Bisogna dire che ogni cosa si facesse in
questo paese doveva essere fatta due volte e spesso l'uno contro
l'altra, come se ci fossero due anime; l'una raccolta attorno alla
vecchia chiesa di S.Paolo nel cuore della vallata, il quartiere piu'
antico e decaduto dove vivevano soprattutto le famiglie baroniali e i
contadini; e l'altro sulla cima del monte, raccolto attorno la chiesa di
San Sebastiano nel quartiere nuovo dove s'era adunata la borghesia degli
impiegati, negozianti professionisti, dov'erano il corso, i bar, il
municipio e il teatro.
Si combatteva per ogni cosa. Per esempio il patrono
era S.Paolo,nero, calvo,terribile, vestito di nero, la spada baleante
che aveva tagliato cento e una teste di cristiani, e lassu' proclamarono
un altro patrono, San Sebastiano naturalmente, candito, bellissimo,
intellettuale, legato ad un alberello e trafitto da frecce d'argento,
signore dei laureati, degli artigiani e degli studenti...

The celebrations
include processions of the Saints' image, with
concerts by various bands, musical entertainment in
the evenings, artistic illumination and fireworks.
Every year the faithful renew moving traditions,
including the "bare shoulder" and the "journey
barefoot": these represent the dissolution of a vow
for a favour granted. |

CHRISTMAS
During the
Christmas period in Piazza del Popolo the largest
Christmas tree in Sicily is set up with the scenic
backdrop of the baroque facade on the church of S1.
Sebastian; in the old town centre there are a series
of cribs and in the Castelvecchio district, a live
crib is set up.

The Carnival
at Palazzolo is one of the oldest in Sicily and as
well as the traditional procession of allegorical
carts and groups dressed up, it offers visitors
dances and fun, rustic festivals with traditional
local products such as sausage, trout pastry,
macaroni, cavatieddi and cannoli.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CLASSICAL THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
It is
held each year in May at the Greek theatre in Palazzolo.
Young pupils from upper middle schools from all aver
Italy and Europe perform comedies and tragedies by Classical
authors.

THE SUMMER IN PALAZZOLO
As well
as the religious festivals, su mmer in Palazzolo is
characterised by a series of cultural events: music,
shows, concerts and exhibitions. The regular dates
are: the Classical theatre shows and the musical
performances at the Greek Theatre. |
